This article discusses the various challenges and opportunities that arise in managing anthropological expertise within Chile’s public criminal defense system, considering the epistemological, conceptual, methodological, normative, and procedural aspects at play. We present the context in which these issues emerge and the research framework in which they were examined. The argument is made that these problems can be addressed and overcome through an intentional process rooted in applied anthropology known as interactive anthropology. Within this framework, the article describes the main actions carried out by an interdisciplinary team of anthropologists and lawyers working in the interethnic Araucanía of Chile. Between 2015 and 2017, they sought to enhance the role of anthropological expertise in specialized public criminal defense, through the development of an institutional management model based on action research, called the Modelo de Gestión de Peritaje Antropológico (Anthropological Expertise Management Model or MoGPA). This article details the experience during the research and design phase of this model, which was conceived as a solution to the problems identified.
